Legal tech since 2014: law that convinces digitally

Lawyer and techie in one person: that is how legal tech that works comes about. Because I have been at home in both worlds for more than ten years, I translate legal requirements into technical solutions. As an entrepreneur and manager, I turn them into successful legal tech projects.

My story
  • 20+years of leadership experience in digitalisation projects
  • since 2014active in legal tech
  • 2legal tech companies founded and led as managing director

  • alwaysa legal tech enthusiast, day after day

My story

I live legal tech every day, for more than ten years

Legal tech is my everyday life, as a lawyer, as a techie and as an entrepreneur. What began in 2001 with my first internet company has been my daily drive since 2014, when legal tech was only just emerging in Germany: digitalising law in a way that brings tangible benefits to lawyers and clients. Since then I have been out and about at the community's events across Germany, also as a speaker and author, and have been taking legal tech products from the first idea to satisfied customers.

My leadership experience

Legal tech with a commercial eye

I have been a managing director in legal tech since 2018 and know the commercial side from my own responsibility, from strategy and financing to running the day-to-day business. That is why I always assess legal tech legally, technically and commercially at the same time. Every investment has to deliver a measurable economic benefit.

  1. I develop my first software for increasing efficiency and optimising processes: an intranet that digitalises ISO 9001 audits and their documentation.

  2. I deliver numerous internet projects, from concept and strategy to measurable success, and support my clients with my own web hosting.

  3. I study law at Philipps-Universität Marburg while my digital projects continue. For me, law and technology belong together.

  4. Completion of the first state examination in law at Philipps-Universität Marburg with a focus on company law, followed by the start of my legal traineeship.

  5. I sit the second state examination in law. From 2015 I am admitted as a lawyer.

  6. Just as the community in Germany is taking shape, I attend the first legal tech events across the country and have been combining legal and technical knowledge ever since.

  7. As a spin-off from the law firm I was working at at the time, I co-found and lead my first legal tech company. It digitalises GDPR obligations.

  8. In Cologne I found a second legal tech company with a seed financing round. Its scalable SaaS solution handles General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) obligations digitally.

  9. Legal depth, technical understanding and entrepreneurial experience: I bring all of this to a leadership role in a law firm for legal tech and AI.

My skills

I know legal tech across the board

From modelling legal processes in legal engineering to the technical architecture as legal tech architect and the rollout in day-to-day practice through transformation and change: I know every step of a legal tech project from my own work. I translate legal requirements into technical solutions and lead the specialist teams across all of these areas.

My role

Project leadership that connects law and technology

I lead legal tech projects together with the partnership and the specialist teams, and I stand behind the result. Getting there takes four steps.

  1. 1

    Analyse

Setting the goals with the partnership, assessing processes and deciding where legal tech and AI deliver the greatest benefit.

  2. 2

    Design

Owning the roadmap and building data protection, professional conduct rules and the AI Act into the concept from the outset.

  3. 3

    Implement

Coordinating the specialist teams, setting priorities and safeguarding quality through to sign-off.

  4. 4

    Rolling out and scaling

Creating acceptance within the firm, measuring results and developing the offering further in commercial terms.

Legal engineering

From legal problem to digital workflow
Analysing and specifying processes

I break client work down into individual steps, identify where automation and AI deliver the greatest benefit, and translate that into clear specifications for development.

AI workflows for legal practice

I design prompting, retrieval and agent workflows that reliably prepare routine legal work. The lawyer stays in control at all times and gives the final approval.

Unlocking firm knowledge for AI

I prepare templates, documents and practical experience so that knowledge systems and AI applications can draw on them precisely. Scattered knowledge becomes a real competitive advantage.

Making AI quality measurable

Using substantive test series, I assess the accuracy, completeness and reliability of AI results. That builds trust before a solution goes into day-to-day practice.

Legal tech architecture

Systems that scale securely
System landscapes and interfaces

I plan how practice management software, document management and AI services work together and how data flows securely. That way the architecture grows with every new requirement.

LLM applications and AI agents

I connect language models with the firm's knowledge and deploy agents wherever they can take over entire steps of the work. In my second company, AI is in productive use.

Selecting and testing technology

I make architecture decisions and assess new legal tech and AI products in terms of benefit, security and cost. Before any investment, I put them to the test with a rapid proof of concept.

Security and AI standards

I implement legal professional privilege, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the AI Act in technical terms and define binding standards for the use of AI. With me, security is part of the architecture.

Transformation and change

Embedding new ways of working in everyday practice
Rollout from pilot to regular operation

I support new solutions from the first pilot group through to stable regular operation. My benchmark: they are used willingly and as a matter of course in day-to-day work.

Redesigning processes

With process mapping I make workflows visible, redesign them and capture them in clear standards, so that good work succeeds equally well everywhere.

Change management that inspires

I win lawyers over to new ways of working, with communication that convinces and with training and workshops straight from practice. That turns change into a shared endeavour.

Measuring usage and impact

Together with partners and practice groups, I define success metrics, measure how new solutions are actually used and turn the findings into concrete improvements.

Leadership experience

Leading teams and companies successfully
Leading interdisciplinary teams

Since 2018 I have led interdisciplinary teams as managing director, building them up and developing talent. I speak the language of both law and technology and lead as an equal.

Owning strategy and roadmap

I develop the legal tech and AI strategy, set clear priorities and represent the roadmap to partners and management.

Thinking and deciding commercially

I am responsible for budgets and approach every decision from the perspective of its benefit. For my second company I raised venture capital.

Entrepreneurial responsibility

Two companies of my own, from founding to a growing business: I know first-hand what it means to be responsible for results, team and customers.

Two sides of legal tech

Efficiency inside, products outside

Legal tech always has two sides: it makes processes in law firms and legal departments faster and more efficient. And it creates digital products that clients and future clients use directly. I always think about both sides together, because only then does legal tech reach its full effect.

Internally for law firms and legal departments

Efficiency and process optimisation

Legal tech and AI simplify everyday legal work and free up time for what only lawyers can do.

  • Automated documentsContracts and pleadings are created from reviewed templates in just a few minutes.
  • AI as an assistantDrafts, summaries and research with AI, reviewed and approved by the lawyer.
  • Digital matter workflowsFrom enquiry to invoice, every step runs digitally, transparently and on time.
  • Firm knowledge on demandThe whole team finds templates, judgments and know-how in seconds.
  • More time for adviceRoutine runs automatically, demanding questions get full attention.
  • Higher margin per matterThe same quality in less time increases the profitability of every matter.

Scalable SaaS solutions

Alongside advisory work, I develop digital products that clients can use themselves around the clock. That pays off in several ways:

  • Client loyaltyThe tool accompanies the client day to day, and the firm stays present.
  • New mattersAn online product opens the door, and the matter grows out of its use.
  • Recurring revenuesPredictable subscription income, in addition to hourly fees.
  • ScalingCapture knowledge digitally once and use it as often as you like.
  • A clear profile in the marketDigital offerings show innovation and attract modern clients.
  • More advisory workStandard cases run digitally, demanding questions reach the lawyer.

From my own practice

From the first idea to a running business

What I recommend to law firms, I have done myself: as founder and managing director I built two legal tech companies and took responsibility for every phase, from product development to sales. My knowledge comes straight from entrepreneurial practice.

  • 2018Founded my first legal tech company
  • SaaSDeveloped data protection as scalable subscription software
  • 2023Venture capital for the second company
  • AIUsed to increase efficiency and build a fully scalable business model

How legal tech scales

With software as a service and AI, the number of subscribers can multiply while costs stay almost the same. I worked to this model in both of my legal tech companies, by turning the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) into scalable software. This basic model can of course be applied to many other areas of law as well.

Looking ahead

Legal tech and AI for the legal market of tomorrow

Clients expect results, speed and digital collaboration. At the same time, AI is fundamentally changing legal work. I combine both: an eye on the market and the experience of bringing AI into practice responsibly.

AI takes legal tech to the next level

Classic legal tech followed fixed rules. Today generative AI reads and drafts, while the lawyer steers and approves. Next, AI agents will handle entire steps of work, from file analysis to drafting, under human control. From my own product development I know what convinces the market about AI.

Open to new things

Ready for new legal tech projects

At the end of 2026 I will be free to take on a new role. My goal is to take charge of legal tech and AI in a law firm or company from a strong legal position, and to make it a pioneer in its own market.

  • Developing, assessing and taking responsibility for legal tech ideas
  • Delivering products from concept to day-to-day operation
  • Leading teams of lawyers and developers
  • Improving law firm processes and creating services for clients
  • Using AI in a legally sound and commercially sensible way
